intermittent oil smoke

Post by elementfe » Thu Aug 09, 2018 12:58 pm

Here's an odd one- new (to me) 83 interstate- I'm just putting around the neighborhood for now, I had gone about ten miles on country roads and noticed an oil smell- looked in the rearview and noticed a haze in the mirrors. Pulled over and found that there was a pretty good amount of oil smoke from both tailpipes...shut it off, then back on, and it stopped...not to return, in about five miles back to town. I"ve only ridden it in the neighborhood since then, but odd....
It sat for a couple years, and smoked when first started, which I chalked up to oil seeping into the cylinders.
When this incident happened, I had about twenty miles of putting around, doing figure eights in parking lots and so on, but hadn't seen any smoke since initial startup.
Any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting, or is it perhaps not a big deal?

Not a big deal..many smoke on startups and after a minute or two clear up..if it isn't doing it anymore ride it and forget about it..sources are bad rings or seal seals. If your compression is good not rings.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Like he said, it's fairly common...but the usual culprit is actually old, hard valve stem seals. It can be rings, but that doesn't tend to go away after the bike is warmed up. It's harmless, just watch your oil level.

Thanks!
I imagine there's not a piece of rubber or composite on this bike that isn't showing some age.
