Poor radio Reception ???? and static

Post by curtm » Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:00 am

Had my bike for about a year, have done a lot of work on it, But there also seems like a lot of crackling going on when radio is turned on, it does also have rear speakers, I replaced front speaker, thought the volume dial, Pot may be dirty ,cleaned with contact cleaner, problem still exixts, thought it the was the antenna, cleaned all the antenna connections, other interesting fact, when playing music thru cassestte, no crackiling noise etc, tells me its not a speaker problem
any suggestions would be good, i would hate to have to replace radio or remove it, i have electronics background but not sure if i want to get in to repairing cold solder joints in the radio etc.
any one have any tips ??

i should try AM to see if it does same thing, also wonder if fader by key switch could be dirty ???

The crackling seems more like an antennae issue to me. I would be tempted to clean up the "base" connection of that antennae of all the rust/crud built up over 27-28 yrs, , , if problem persists, get some diagnostic equipment to check the output. A cracked antennae is a possibility after all that, , , maybe a replacement is in order from flea-bay.

How do they come off the base, never had that apart yet, But i think you maybe right about the Antenna, Thought about ordering one of the $10.00 ones off e bay to see if it would help, leave the old one there and install one under the set or something.

Take a look at the '91 Aspy Radio parts fiche on one of the parts sites, that'll give you an idea. Looks like it unbolts from the pocket/trunk area.

You could just get any old AM/FM antenna from an auto wrecker (probably almost free) & plug it in, just as a test. If the static goes away, then you have your answer...
