carb cleaning

the 1982 gl1100i that i am reviving was only running if i kept the choke on.
i removed dis-assembled and cleaned the carbs following the excellent how-tos on the goldwing docs and randakks site.
note : did not use any new parts, just a good examination and cleaning. found lots of clogged and partially clogged jets.
bench tested before installing and found that on number 4 the float needle was not seating and was flooding the bowl.
fixed that and re-tested. found that the accelerator pump circuits worked well on 1 and 3, so-so on number 2 and not at all on number 4.
dis-assembled, cleaned those circuits as best i could and re-assembled.
1,2 and 3 are now spraying a healthy stream when i work the throttle; number 4 has more of a dribble than a stream.
do you think this will cause driveability issues, or should i just call it done and try adding some fuel treatment for the first couple of tankfuls ?

Fix number 4 - more cleaning - it would be unwise to think after all your cleaning you are willing to hope that fuel running through the system will clear any historic blockage...

I would feel more comfortable knowing I have fixed it (hopefully permanently)...you are 99% of the way there - a little extra effort for 100% cure... :D

you are right, of course ... guess i just needed a bit of prodding before i went back in there yet again ... big sigh ...
this time i will let it soak overnight; should be just what the doctor ordered.

do you have access to an UltraSonic cleaner?

if you do, use White Vinegar for the solution, do that even if you don't....

let it boil over night, will do miracles.

AZ ... an ultrasonic cleaner is probably my next tool purchase. i clean too many lawnmower carbs to NOT have one.

while we are on the subject of carbs ... how many turns out should the idle air screws be from the bottom ? i counted them when i was disassembling but considering how poorly it ran i might as well start from the base setting and go from there.

Borrow some vacuum gauges - should make the bike run a lot better.

You can bench sync with the butterfly valves setting them equally - but final sync use the vacuum gauges with bike running and warmed up.

aussie ... i want to make sure we are on the same page ... i am talking about the idle air mixture screws that are mounted vertically, on the underside of the carbs.
these need to be adjusted before the synch process i believe.

Sorry I was just thinking ahead.

My rule of thumb is you turn each idle mixture screw in until the bike makes a noticeable stumble - then back the idle screw off half a turn - you might need to do this adjustment on each carb a few times as you will also need to adjust the main idle down/up as you go.

got it.
never got around to the vinegar slow-boil last night so the carb is in the pot as we speak.
worth mentioning that the smaller of the 2 aluminum fuel tubes which flow fuel between carbs 2 & 4 (i believe this is the very tube that carries fuel for the accelerator pump circuit) was partially clogged ... again. this would explain the lame dribble coming from the accelerator pump nozzle on number 4 and clearly demonstrates the need for the vinegar boil. thanks again for giving my arm a bit of a twist.
at least now i am getting comfortable with taking these carbs apart, and i know where the tiny bits are that i need to watch for.

note to self ... and anyone else who wants to clean carbs ...

DON'T use apple cider vinegar to boil your carbs in . it seems that the color (impurities) sticks to your carbs. not good. use the clear, pure, white vinegar. :oops:
