Belt Tensioner

Post by Steve01 » Thu Sep 27, 2018 2:26 pm

So I am replacing the timing belts for the 1st time. Under each tensioner there is a L shaped bar. the 2 tensioner bolts go through it and then there is a place for a 3rd bolt. I found the part # 11531431000. I do not see this in any of the tutorials for changing the belts, and the 3rd bolt was missing on both bars. Any insight is appreciated.

Only two bolts for the tensioners, one is the "pivot" and the other locks the tensioner down once you have the belts at the correct tension... with the tensioners tightened down rotate the crankshaft slightly in the direction to where it's pulling the belt against the tensioner, and you should be able to deflect the "slack" side about a half-inch total (quarter inch either way) with moderate pressure. More than that and the belt is too loose, and you don't want the belt tight as a banjo string, either.

There is a spec for belt tension (so many ounces of force to deflect the belt so many mm) but you need a gauge, I've always just set the belt tension so that it "feels right" and never had an issue.

Why does a bolt hole on the L shape bracket under the tensioner line up exactly to a threaded hole?
