The heater control unit grounds the relay if the engine is running and all the heater circuits are good. The usual problem is one of the grip heaters, if they are open nothing works. How do you plan to wire in the aftermarket grips? Good luck with that clymer manual.

ty dave
well I started with left grip , I cut the wire off and checked for p0wer (not smart) then tried to remove OEM throttle heated grip found out by VIGOROUS TWISTING that you CAN break the throttle tube cable holders
REALLY not smart ! ! IT'S BONDED TO THE TUBE>>>> have bought 2 sets of aftermarket heated grips the second set from Extreme Honda who promised they would fit ,, both are 1 inch SHORT... SHOW CHROME grips with throttle tube built in to replace grip with comfort pkg
and CLYMER is noooooo accident more pics less over my head tech talk
OEM I heard is more slanted to mechanics I'm NOT ... CLYMER MORE slanted at DYI shadetrees like me I did a complete harness on 450 Honda twin and by the time I was done '' SAW exactly what EVERY wire's function was including dual points with 1 lobe 1 set grounds the other set which means one runs + thru the other runs - thru the points
From what I hear its series so just have to find the Christmas tree bulb that's out, I'm smart enough to figure IMMEDATELY test #9 10 is non -sensical bad WRONG >>> ANY help APPRECIATED
Terry Ruth
ps borrowing 2006 Honda OEM manual tomorrow or Mon.
my grips/Clymer is 5 days away

No, it does not have to be rolling. Do you have power on the white/green wire, pin 7 on the HCU? It comes through the grip heaters so they have to be connected.

Still in the same place I told you in the PM, The heater relay is the second from the right side of the bike on the green row.

right on again I assumed every different heater had its own
not knowing what the HCU is doing inside's my problem
HAVE it torn apart and see by wiring diagram that HCU controls ALLL
any idea what
green/orange
red
yellow
black
yellow/ black
these are all on the 3 switches and all play with the hcu which I think grounds all the heaters I see the positive running to all ( so other side MUST be ground??) and will see if the switches are sending power also will see if continuity in all heaters
guesss I want to know which pins on the hcu plugin to run ohmmeter on the plug to see if the switches are functioning my hcu is not grounding the relay for sure that MAY BE ALLLL the problem but want to check while I have it apart

You really need a service manual if you can't follow the diagrams I posted above, there are just too many pages for me to screen shot and post on the diagnostics of this. Have you tried jumping the relay?

Guys, don't want to hijack, but I've got an idle, somewhat related question about that throttle tube being bonded the OP described. My '08 1800 does not have heated grips and I'm thinking about installing them. The question: Are ALL throttle tubes bonded like the OP's '06 or just the ones with OEM heat?
Thanks!

maybe I'm going to recant as I have never seen unheated grips oem but its no big deal 2 screws on right grip 1 clamp screw slack throttles remove 2 cables
its no bs that they will hit 194 degrees F wide open 12v in 10 min. way to hot to touch with bare hands

Thank you Terry. I installed these on a Concours C-10 once and the grip had to be split and peeled off the throttle tube. Don't know if the Wing grips are "peelable" (to coin a word). They are the correct length.
Thank you again for the reply.

The grips are glued on, they can be removed. A small air nozzle under the edge should pop them loose or if you are going to install new grips just cut them lengthwise and peel them off.
