What Should I Expect for Trike Mileage

Post by okie2ee » Wed Oct 10, 2018 11:14 am

Just took a long trip on my newly acquired Trike and mileage was around 22 - 24 MPG for the trip. I drove the Interstate all the way, 700 miles one way, cruising at 75 - 80 MPH pulling a trailer. I was expecting 30+ at the least..........but based on the few posts that I have seen, I may be expecting to much..........just wondering what other Trikes are getting.............thanks

Yep.
GL1500, Trike & Trailer, 75-80 mph, that sounds about right. Even with no trailer, I've seen folk run like that on a 1500 trike and see maybe 29 mpg. I have seen GL1500 2 wheelers drop to low 30s at speed as well.

To get that 30 plus, need to drop back to 65 or so, ....... 55mph and likely you'll break into upper 30s or low-mid 40s maybe, ....... and just putzing around on Blue Ridge Parkway or other back road, no trailer but two up at 45-50, I usually see mid-upper 40s.

Many a GL1500 gets real thirsty at 3000 plus rpm cruising.

When we made trips out west in our '01 Mercury Grand Marquis, I found I was getting as good gas mileage as several GL1500 trikes in the group (friends, we paid them a surprise meet up) we met at Goulding's Lodge and then followed a day and a half to Santa Fe, NM via Albuquerqui.

Thanks..............now I don't feel so bad...............cruising RPM was around 3500 - 4000...........my V-Max gets better mileage and I push it right along...........probably won't be slowing down to 55 MPH unless being tailed by law enforcement in a 55 MPH zone...........not that I'm an unlawful citizen, I just "feel the need for speed"....... :D

I bet the V -max ain't a trike pulling a trailer. Lot of wind resistance. Those rear fenders are really always deployed "air brakes".

I've met/known a few myself ….. :D

Ha, I'll bet when you pulled up behind them with those blue lights on they felt the need to slow down!

my 1800 pulling the Square Wooden box trailer averaged about 32ish over 4,000 miles.

my '98SE averaged 33.3 over 3,500 miles from Tampa, FL to Phoenix, AZ over a 3 week time period.
got a spreadsheet to detail that one out.

even on 2 wheels, the 1500 at 3500 rpm will be guzzling fuel at 32-34 mpg
