gl1100 aspencade primary drive

to all members out there who can help me
i am a new member and this is my 1st posting and i hope that i can help other members one day,however my problem is this, once my aspencade engine is started up there is a knocking/slaping sound from the back of the engine, i am thinking that it is the primary drive chain and if so is there any way of adjusting it without stripping the engine down as i notice from the spares manual that there is a chain tensioner fitted, also if this is not possible will it do any harm running with a slack chain,

The peimary drive may be slapping because the carbs are out if sync. To tighten or replace thetensioner will probably call for dropping the engine. The noise could also be the bolt on the alternator coming loose. This can be accessed from the back by unscrewing the inspection plug on back of the housing. This plug looks just like the level plug on your final drive.

Are you hearing this noise at idle, or when accelerating at low RPM?
