Fuel sender interchange

Post by Mtrdrms » Thu Oct 11, 2018 2:40 pm

Does anyone know if a 90-00 fuel sender will work on an 88? I have an 88 with a bad sender and the later ones are plentiful but a slightly different shape bend.

I don't have personal experience with an '88 vs 90-00 sending unit , , ,but the part numbers seem to indicate it would work fine. I'd suggest you stick with anything closer to '90 rather then '00. Even if you got an '88 sending unit, you might have to slightly "tweek" the bend to reflect an accurate fuel level.

as the Fuel Tank is the same shape on all of them, it will work.

none of them are accurate, so what we all suggest is that you 'kink' the float arm so that it reads Kerrect at 1/2 tank or 3 gallons of fuel left.

remove fuel pump, tank has to be 3 gallons or less, or it will over flow :( :(
empty the tank, siphon, etc......

pour in exactly 3.0 gallons of gas.

get on the left side of the bike, reach inside with your right hand and find the float. (front left corner)
raise/lower it and with handlebar Ignition Switch OFF, and Ignition switch ON.

Now that you know where the float "should be, kink the float arm so that the gauge now reads exactly 1/2 tank.

Benefits:
  • 1/2 tank means 3 gallons of fuel
1/4 tank means ~1.5 gallons of fuel
1/8 tank means ~ 1.1 gallon of fuel
Empty means you are now on RESERVE and the Low Fuel light should be on
on my 98, at 1/8th tank, the Low Fuel light was just starting to light up ( in a dark room/night )
at empty, it is brightly ON and letting you know, find a gas pump "real soon now" :D

Thats great information, thank you. I test fit the 1995 sender and even though its a different shape, it fits well and works better than the old one. I will attempt to calibrate it later. Thanks again.
