Pics of painted chrome garnish above headlight?

Post by Stew » Tue Oct 30, 2018 12:37 pm

Anyone who's painted the honking big chrome garnish below the windshield got pics to share? I was wondering how that would look color matched to the bike on the later 1500's but would like to see any and everything. Deciding if that's something I want to do...

You could try this; take a picture of your bike and 'photoshop' it. I have been thinking about it too and i know someone who had is bike wrapped in black, looked good. I just can't seem to find a picture of it though.....

Found it! Albeit very small

You could try vinyl wrapping instead of painting.

I am painting mine along with the other 70 or so pieces of the bike.
I ground off the chrome with a angle grinder. I came off surprisingly easy. Then went over it with a 120 grit flapper disc to remove most of the wheel marks.
Next is 4 coats of Sherwin-Williams Spray-Fill and a guide coat.

I sanded all the textured parts smooth. Had to buy a new meter panel as the old one was sun damaged (warped).

I have replaced many panels due to the heavy handedness of the PO and his choice of bolt-on chrome.

Now it is time to start sanding all those pieces again!

I started back in June and have worked on it about an hour almost every night since.

Here are a few pictures. I will update as I progress if anyone is interested.

Wow, that's impressive - but where do you sleep???? ;)

All kidding aside, I would be very curious to know how much paint it will take to repaint it all.

Try plastidip. It comes in a wide array of colors and its easily removed if you dont like it. You just peel it off.

I've seen it in the home center stores, Menards or Home Depot, but they usually carry the basic colors.

I have the bra that was offered for the 1500 and blends in well with the black color of the bike. I know it isn't the same as painting it, but it is sort of color matched so you get some indication of how it would look.

Been there, done that. How many colours have you tried?. Are you mixing the base coat yourself and adding your own metal flake?.What type of paint are you going to use?. Are you going for mirror lacquer finish, or a little orange peel?. Going to look bostin'.

Not married with kids then :)

If you are...... DAMN!!!!

Wow that small pic of the black painted one looks really good! The bra also looks good but not as good as the paint ;) . I was thinking about vinyl or plastidip as well.

Tony, definitely keep sharing your progress, what color are you going to be painting?

Stew,

I have had good results in the past on small projects using Color-Rite aerosol cans. One can of base and one can of pearl will be plenty for your garnish. Use several light coats, it is thin and runs easily.

https://www.colorrite.com/wizardresults.cfm

I would recommend a aerosol urethane clear over the Color-Rite spray clear which is lacquer.

I have not decided on a base color yet, however, I am going to paint all the plastic that was textured metallic silver.

Right now I am trying to figure out what went wrong with my carb rebuild. Won't run below 1300 RPM. Runs great above that though.
