It's a coil of wire with a metal frame and a magnet.Part of the frame sticks out of the casing...when the magnetic field is disturbed by the trigger wheel blade, the magnetic field collapses..when this happens a small fast voltage is developed into the coil...maybe 0.2 volts.
This change of voltage is picked up by the ignition module..actually a really fast solid state switch that pulses the ignition coil primary winding to ground...and SPARK.

For "it"? Do you mean the pulse coils?
Not for the bike. The ignition system was designed for these parts.
Are you having some problem?

no, not any problems. not that I know of anywho! bike is being reassembled right now, should be done with it by sunday. but seeing these rascals aren't available anymore I was just wondering if there is a suitable substitute coil that can be installed. actually surprises me that they are not available aftermarket. with as many of these older wings that are still around one would think some electronic guru would have developed something by now. this basically works as the old gm HEI ignition. those pickup coils would just die on you in traffic. tks for the info.

It's very rare that the pulse coil fails... Had a few of these bikes with many many miles and years with no trouble.
The worst thing that can happen is improper reassembly of the parts that make it work..
I have seen a missing guide pin..Rusted and seized advance mechanism and advance mount plate guide bearings ....besides the often broken vacuum advance canister.
All that mechanical stuff needs to be tested before it's covered up...
The bike really does run better when the advance system does move it from 10°BTDC all the way to 32° BTDC max...

I haven't dug into it, and won't unless it goes haywire. only engine work I've done on it so far is valve adjustment and timing belts/gates idlers and tension springs. don't care to pull the engine unless it is needed. engine has 72,000 on it. tks.

No need to pull the engine to work on the ignition system. At least pull a vacuum on the advance canister.Srr if it holds and you hear it move inside.
