Cam belt tensioner pulleys

Post by Bill P. » Tue Oct 30, 2018 3:15 pm

I'm in the middle of changing the camshaft seals on my 1980 GL1100, a job that the previous owner started 3 years ago and never finished. So after sitting with no covers for all that time, the tensioner pulleys picked up some surface rust. I cleaned it off with sandpaper and want to put something on it to prevent further rust. The book says not to use any oil or grease in the area of the belts to prevent them from being damaged. I'm thinking maybe a soap-based grease (pipe joint lubricant). Anybody have a suggestion?

Nothing...just remove the surface rust and polish it smooth.
Even my brake rotors on my truck grow surface rust in a week..I just drive them clean.
Once running again, the belts will keep them polished up.
