does '77 plastic fit '81 ?

Post by winguyjo » Tue Nov 06, 2018 10:55 pm

i can buy fairing, luggage, and crash bars from a '77 for a fairly decent price.
i know the mirrors are mounted on the handlebars on a '77 rather than the on the fairing.
any other differences worth worrying about ?
does it all bolt up the same ?
is the colour (dark red) the same for '77 and '81 ?

The fairing, luggage etc. on a 1000 was all added on, didn't come with any of it. No, the mountings are all different from a 1000 to an 1100 but If you could find the proper brackets they could be mounted on an 1100.

thanks for the reply, dave.
so, if the seller kept all the mounting hardware i should be in business ?
i sure don't want to be stuck looking for brackets to fit a 41-year-old bike.

Not really..if it's a Vetter fairing it shoudl fit teh mounting brackets didn't change that much but the bag mounts may be a problem as the frame and side cover a totally difference. so what brand of bags does he have.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

well, i haven't seen the stuff in person yet (a solid hours drive away), but the fairing has a honda emblem on it, and the bags say "interstate".
could it be he installed stuff that came from an '80-'83 ?
will the crash bars bolt on ?
are you saying that a '77 has a completely different frame than an '81 ?
thanks for the feedback.

A picture or two would help a lot. Hard to give help otherwise. Or do you have a link to a for sale site?

No, that's what I was trying to get across, the 1000 brackets will NOT fit an 1100. The crash bars probably will though.

If they are indeed Hondaline parts he could have adapted them to a 1000 but whether you can adapt them back is another question.
Yes, a 77 is a GL1000, an 81 is a GL1100, different frame, mostly at the rear.

What we are looking at appears to be a 79 Gl1000 (had one like it) not a 77. Could be a 78 hard to tell as he has removed the original turnsignals (79 were rectangular I think 78 were round)in what I think was called candy limited maroon (code R7CC), So if you want to buy these bags etc they should fit your Gl1100 as it appears they were originally off an 1100. That is assuming that he has not bastardized the brackets in some way or repainted them. The saddlebags seem to be tilted to an upward angle at the rear so maybe he has just fit the saddlebag stays on without cutting or bending them. The color codes for 1100s are listed on this site: https://www.northamericangoldwings.com/ ... -of-color/
You will note that 80 & 81 Gl1100 color is Candy Muse Red-U, (code R104CU) While 82 & 83 were Candy Wineberry Red-U (code
R114CU. The Paint from 79 Gl1000 is not a match for the Gl1100s.
I wouldn't buy these unless I went and had a good look at them. Take one of your side panels with you and check the match, also see if the brackets etc have been cut or altered (should be easy to see). Make sure you get the keys to fit the locks and releases. Sounds to me like the seller has no clue what the bike is if he told you it was a 77. If it were me and looking for bags I would advertise what you want and for what year. As an example I have just stripped my 83 Aspencade (Nimbus Grey) and have everything needed to mount these to a naked bike. A lot of folks have done this and there are quite a few sets gathering dust somewhere. I am sure you could find a set matching your paint if these ones don't. I am starting to ramble so enough for now.
