New Rear Tire

Post by RockportDave » Fri Nov 09, 2018 4:21 pm

While removing the rear wheel on my 1500 to grease the driveshaft and splines, I noticed a roofing nail in my rear tire. I was planning to go to the darkside with an Austone when this G3 tire was ready for replacement, but it still had some miles left so I haven’t ordered one.
I am on vacation and we want to get in all the riding we can so I decided to go into town and see what I could find. Went to the local Honda dealer and they want $325 for a G4. I will not be buying from them. So I went to the local “non affiliated” motorcycle shop to get balancing beads and while there asked the salesman if they have a tire. He was going to look up the size when I told him it’s a 180-60-16. We go to the tire rack and find a 180-65-16 for $232 so I purchase it and the balancing beads.
When I got to my truck I placed the new tire on top of the old one and the 5 watt light bulb (not too bright) in my head comes on and I realized I got the numbers wrong (160-80-16).
When I returned to the store the two salesmen were about to come get me. They realized the tire I had was not the right one for the GL1500.
They checked and had to order a G4 that will be here Monday, same price, so I will be wearing out a new G4 before I go to the darkside.
Guess I’ll have time to install the wife’s Jacuzzi tub.

She’s wanting to ride as much as I do and is “patiently waiting for Monday. The weather finally cooled off here to 50/60 degrees so riding is nice.

That's great man. You're lucky. The temps here in Kentucky are topping out in the low forties. Enjoy it while you can.

Got the new tire mounted with Dynabeads installed. Got it on the bike, but threw my back out so it’s a slow go to finish.
It’s 40°F with a 20 mph north wind today so I’m in no hurry to finish.
We’ve decided not to install the Jacuzzi tub. It is wider than the existing tub, so the drain will be about 1 1/2” off. Not an easy fix with the house on a concrete slab.

My photos are not rotating in the forum. WingAdmin is working on it.
I have a pitbull m/c jack that will pick the bike up 2’. I cut a hole in a 2x6 to fit a small floor jack head and used it to roll the wheel out from under the bike. Makes it easy for one person to remove the wheel.
I do need you to keep your cold weather in Oklahoma, it’s creeping down to South Texas.

Sorry Dave but we've had wind from the south all week.

dingdong,
I know I’m full of hot air, but I don’t think I have enough to reach OKC...it is supposed to warm up tomorrow.
Got the tire on and everything back together. Took a cold test ride to fill it up and everything seems good to go.
While taking it apart, I noticed a crack in one of the saddle bags, so I welded it up. I also sewed up a small tear on the front of the seat.
