Running rough/ lights and gauges sporadic

Post by Wendy71 » Wed Nov 14, 2018 12:55 am

I hope someone can help me out. Have a 1984 GL1200i. Here is what I am dealing with. First of all was on a long road trip. Dropped back 2 cylinders. Trailered it home. Took it to shop, it sat there. Finally they said need new coil pack. I got one and delivered it. The guy never changed it "said to much trouble". Now this is where I really need help. I went and picked up bike on trailer. Again took it up there because it dropped back to cylinders. When picked it up there was more problems that was not the case when dropped it off. When started bike to put on trailer, lights are flickering crazy like, gauges are bouncing all over place and it sounds terrible (worse then just down 2 cylinders) the Neutral light is now on regardless of what gear bike is in.The more u twist the throttle more sporadic lights and gauges get!! The bike has no power now, will not even pull ramp height incline (it would when dropped it off) I do know the guy said he was at the starter solenoid (unknown why). The coil pack I m sure will fix rear cylinders. But coil pack should not be causing rest of it. Could it be the ignition control unit, or pulse generator, or what else could it be?

Your gonna have to stabilize the electrical before going deeper..
Spuratic voltages...Start at a common point..Start the bike and measure the voltage directly at the battery posts.Do inspect then for being loose or corroded..
If it's jumping all over the place, unplug the voltage regulator and check again.
A process of elimination..
While your looking at the battery, also inspect the 3 yellow wire plug for burning.

I suspect a bad ground. Not sure where the main harness ground is on an 84 but I'm not far from you if you want it fixed PM me.

you really need to take Dave up on this offer, he loves to ride, and he is the best motorcycle mechanic anywhere in the area....

he does ALL of my maintenance, and I have to ride 260 miles to get to him.
