Interesting concept for head injury - Q-Collar

This is a "product" that I saw mentioned in the latest edition of Motorcycle Consumer News. They mentioned it in their "gift guide" which is somewhat misleading, as it is still in the research stages, and is not yet available as a product.

Basically they are looking for ways to reduce brain injury during impact. Their research thus far has centered around sports related injuries (soccer, football) but it would easily transfer to motorcycles. The idea is to mimic the method biology uses to cushion the brain against impact in creatures like the woodpecker. In those creatures, a small muscle in the neck slightly restricts outflow of blood from the brain by applying slight pressure to the jugular vein. The result is a larger volume of blood in the brain, causing more cushioning.

It definitely wouldn't be a replacement for a helmet, but could definitely help with brain injury in impacts in which the helmet does not completely dampen all of the impact forces.

The web site is here, with a video that demonstrates the concept better than I can explain it: http://q30innovations.com/q-collar/

Amazing what they think of.
I wonder if the thickness of a persons neck, which could be fat or muscle, will be a problem.
