rear cover (stator cover) cannot be removed from driver spline.
have a 1987 gl1200 interstate. trying to do a stator replacement.original owner replaced in 1997 with 37,000 mi .im replacing 2nd one at 67,000 mi. there is a what looks to be a 28mm bolt over a bearing that is recessed behind the rear cover. I have the 1987 shop manual and on page 16-12 in the charging section says that the rear cover will come out without having to remove the output shaft. it does not come out the bearing looks to be pressed on the rear case .i have removed the pressed on dust cover w/oil seal and before i attempt to remove the bolt i wanted to see if anyone had this same problem. any replies would greatly appreciated. sittin in my garage.

Just pull the case off and if the output shaft comes with it pull it out of the bearing from the inside and put it back in the engine, easy.

Re: rear cover (stator cover) cannot be removed from driver spline.
update- CAN'T REMOVE 1987 REAR COVER BY PULLING OR PRYING,YOU WILL DAMAGE ONE OF THREE COVER,SHAFT OR WHAT I DID WAS COMPRIMISED MY BEARING. you will have to do one of two things to get cover off.remove locknut 2 tools needed which are a locknut removal wrench (07916-MB00000) shaft holder (07923-6890101) both tools are hard to find and expensive. have located the shaft holder only. IF ANY MEMBER HAS A ALTERNATIVE TOOL OR A WAY TO MAKE ONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I HAVE TO GET LOCKNUT OFF TO REPLACE THE BEARING I DAMAGED FROM PRYING COVER OFF.option two (would of attempted before ruining my bearing) would to open output shaft access plate ,remove two screws and pull cover and shaft out together .replace stator and carefully reattach cover and shaft at same time, difficult but can be done.hopefull you will not damage the bearing.i am in the process of trying to make a locknut tool and will try to use my ujoint to hold spindle.will update when I make a tool that will work.hope this helps someone that is dealing with the same problem.

Have you removed the clutch cover. It has to come off before you can pull the rear cover off.

Re: rear cover (stator cover) cannot be removed from driver spline.
I have removed the clutch cover by removing the output access plate and removing the 2 bolts that separate the output shaft. output shaft and cover came off together.my problem still exists with the locknut that will allow the output shaft to go past the bearing. the locknut has to come off for me to replace the bearing that I damaged trying to pry it off. this is where im at right now.just purchased a 33mm long impact socket. will cut 1/2" drive end .going to weld a handle to it. I am open to any and all alternatives.thanks.

Re: rear cover (stator cover) cannot be removed from driver spline.
on the 1987 gl1200 there is a locking nut that is under the dust and oil seal .must be removed to get stator cover off .I have the 1987 gl1200 service manual its in section 16-12. only 87' has this locking nut. 84-86 rear cover can be removed by simply removing the bolts.also in the Clymer manual under rear cover and input spline removal.
