Starter not spining the motor over

Post by bvande » Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:14 am

Hello All
I'm having a situation with my 1982 Goldwing GL1100.
The starter starts fine when riding it every day.

My problem is:
When the bike sits for 3-5 days the starter will not turn the bike over. You actually have to hit then starter button enough times to bump the engine over a bit and then it will and spin the motor over. I have gone through everything and I am asking for your help.

Things I have replaced:
Battery- Brand New
Starter- Taken apart twice cleaned and gone over thoroughly, new brushes and lubricated
Starter Button - Sprayed contact cleaner in it

I just don't want to drive it anymore for the fact, I can't trust it.
I don't want to go for a long trip and find out that when I go to ride it won't start.

I would appreciate any help with this

Thank you
BOB

When you have your hit the start button a few times, does it just click then crank?
That sounds like a bad start solenoid.
I like to confirm that first.
A test light probed on the wire feeding the starter..push the start button...when it does not crank the engine is there volts going to the starter?
Don't release the start button for this test.Push and hold when it won't crank..probe the wire when it doesn't work...
If there's no volts while holding the start button in you could jump the starter posts( spark time) to verify it is the solenoid and not a ground or terminal problem.
Starter solenoids don't last forever..they can have "bad" spots in the contact plate.Everytime you click the solenoid that contact plate does rotate a bit.. They also can get sticky inside from wear and intermittent use can affect how well they make contact.

Do you turn the petcock off when you park the bike? If not you may have a hydrolock situation, a carb flooding over filling a cylinder with gas and bumping the starter eventually forces the gas past the rings enough to let it spin over.
