how about the off brand starters on ebay are they ok? or would it be better to buy a used one. thanks for any advice.

I've heard of plastic (instead of steel) reduction gears that don't last in some of the cheap aftermarket starters.

Can I ask what is wrong with your starter? I recently had issues with mine where I thought it was done. I ended up pulling the starter apart and gave it a quick cleaning. The starter was really dirty. Filled with debris and the armature contacts were dirty. I haven't had an issues with the starter since.
