ICU Main Power Naked GL1500

Post by Gerry1965 » Sat Jan 05, 2019 10:04 pm

I have a 1989 GL1500 that i am stripping down for a cafe racer. I do want to start by figuring out what the basics are to power for the run circuit to simplify the wiring harness.

Before i rip everything apart I want to make sure that I have it running without all the stand, angle etc sensors. I am going to re-add them to the basic circuit later.

You must keep both pulse coils, ignition coils, power and ground to get a spark...The fuel pump is triggered from a ignition coil primary.
Ignition timing is altered by vacuum and gear position switch (4th and 5th gear).
Do you have a manual with the schematics for the bike?

I have on order a Haynes manual. Not sure if that will be good enough.

So the black box right side the fuel tank with vacuum line is?

The B.A.S. (Bank Angle Sensor) is on the right side of the bike above the right saddlebag, which has to be working in order to start the engine.
The kick-stand (side stand) has a "switch" that needs to be working correctly before the engine will run. Both can be by-passed or removed but I'm not sure how to get the ECU/ECM to work without them.

That black box is the ECU/ECM(Engine Control Unit/Module). Many of the electronic parts will give/get a signal/power from it.

Your '89 will have a relay under the trunk near the pocket there, on the right side of the bike which powers your fuel pump for about 2 sec's as soon as you turn the key on.

So the bike is totally nude right now. I can bypass both for now. I am going to eliminate as much as I can before I totally take it apart. Here is what I want to eventually keep.

- of course the bike running
- kick stand safety switch
- crank sensor (need to locate)
- shifter position sensor
- vacuum line to ecu
- tip sensor
- anything I am missing?

Question if the ecu is up on the right side of the tank what are the 2 black boxes on top of rear wheel internal fender?

two black boxes on top of the rear fender?? Take a pic of them, , ,there shouldn't be anything there except for possibly the fuel pump relay and the BAS that are in that same area. The PO might have put an "amp" or "booster" for a radio (common place to stick stuff under the seat).

Are you talking about these two black boxes on the rear fender?

Yes those. Which one is which? I see a lot of cruise and ignition switches together on the wiring charts so I don't think the bike would run without them. Will try it. I am not keeping the reverse

NICE INFO mjsracing and CT1500, , , my Interstate doesn't have either of those so I was stumped. I learned something from your help on this one.

Good luck with that project and I'll be watching to see how it turns out. (LOTS OF PICS PLEASE)

OK so due to DOT inspections of my present bike i am looking at a major change as I cannot register the bike in BC Canada without all of the original equipment. I did purchase this bike as salvage so inspection is mandatory. So i have a friend with a 1983 GL1200 frame with a good VIN. How difficult would the fitment bet to set the GL1500 into this frame? is the Neck for the front forks the same size? is the distance from the engine to the rear wheel the same distance? Any one done this before?
