Swapping motors

Post by Taz1966 » Wed Apr 10, 2019 6:09 pm

I'm wanting to know can I put a 1984 GL 1200I motor in my 1985 GL1200I bike? I've already noticed the 84 does not have the front crank sensors on it like the 85 does. If I can put the 84 in the 85 how do I get around the 84 not having the sensors on it? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ok thank you sir, I was at a lost wondering about that. I bought the 84 as a parts bike and need to put the motor in my 85 so I can keep riding while I do repairs on the 85 motor

It's not a pulse generator. It's a vacuum ignition advance like the gl1100 had.
I don't know if you can wire it in, replacing the PG on your 85, or not. It's been too long since I've kept up on the 1200s.

Thank you all for the advice. I've always wanted a Goldwing since the first time I saw one in the early 80's and now I've got one. Only took me 36 years and when I did get one it's a fix-er-uper lol. I'll give an update when I'm done if it was a success or not... Thanks again guys

Starters are different if the 84 doesn’t have one, you’ll need a different starter. You may have to bypass a few things or swap. Some electronic parts were different. I can’t elaborate more than that.

Oh it's definitely been a project, at this point idk if I want to throw gas on it or in it LoL. Got the motor in the bike and everything hooked up, runs like a champ at 2000 or above but having problems below 2000. This motor has set up over a decade and still has some Gremlins to work out of it. Will definitely post pics when I'm done

Ok guys, got a question. I've got the 84 motor in the 85 bike. Runs like a champ at 1500 RPM or higher. I've noticed when cranking the bike it has a great spark outta the left coil (#4 plug) but once it starts it stops firing, then as the RPM's climb to 1500 it starts back firing. I've checked the pulse wire on back of the coil with a test light connected to the + side of the battery, got a dim light while spinning it over, no light when it cranked, then extra bright light with RPM's up. Oh and I'm using the ECM off the 84 parts bike also. Any suggestions on what I could do to correct this problem? Right now I'm wondering if the ECM is bad but don't want to get another till I'm sure.

Asphaltmania, it definitely was a project putting the 84 motor into the 85 frame but after much work I finally succeeded. Here is the picture that you requested...
