Heading for Tucson....what should we see?

Post by cardinal » Thu Apr 11, 2019 10:33 pm

Five of my riding friends, and I, are going to Oro Valley, near Tucson, for a few days in early May. We've been there before, but this time some of our wives will be following in a car. We'll stop in Wellton, near Yuma, for one night. We plan to visit the Yuma Territorial Prison while we're there then head for Kitt Peak Nat. Observatory and our condo's in Oro Valley, the next day. Then on Wednesday, we'll visit the Pima Air and Space Museum, have lunch there then ride up to the top of Mt. Lemmon and back to the Condo's. Our last full day there will. be a ride down to Tombstone and Bisbee. On Saturday we'll head for Cotton wood then Laughlin then on home.
Anything we should see instead of Pima or Kitt peak? We need some good places near Oro Valley to eat, too. Any
suggestions?

Very pretty around Sedona (not far from Cottonwood) when I was down there, don't miss it.

Check out RoadTrippers.com, it'll give you whatever category of "points of interest" you select, within 5, 10, 15...30 miles of your planned route.

Yes, it's beautiful around Sedona, but for the weekend we will be there, the few vacant rooms are pretty expensive. That's why we're staying in Cottonwood.
Thanks.

On your way from Tucson to Cottonwood Take the 69 off of I17 up to the 89A, right at 89A over Mingus Mountain down into Jerome (an old mining community now an artist haven) on to Cottonwood. Leaving Cottonwood go on up through Sedona, Oak Creek canyon to Flagstaff and on to California. An alternate route would be to take I17 up to the 260 to Cottonwood, 89A out of Cottonwood through Jerome to Prescott and then 89 up to I40. It cuts out all the traffic at Sedona.

I like that part about cutting out traffic!
We're overnighting at Laughlin.....primarily because that's what we've always done. Time to revisit that.

If you have the time when you get to Williams you can take the Grand Canyon railroad. Makes for a nice change from being on the bike.

I've always wanted to do that ride, but we're not going to have time this year. We'll save it for another time.

Thanks

I would research any upcoming Williams train rides. I understand they are usually booked far in advance. Hopefully I could be mistaken, though.

Bears doing some research. Maybe it depends on the season......maybe it only operates seasonally.....

What about Tubac, Az.? Good, bad, mediocre.....worth visiting but there are better places? Any good restaurants there?

Talked to a friend of mine that lives near there and he said for a lunch suggestion for a Deli type meal is Tubac Market. It has outside tables too. Next door is The Italian Peasant. Excellent NY style pizza. In the village the number of galleries is overwhelming.
