Tulsa extra-tall windshield mounting

Post by digividsmith » Sat Apr 13, 2019 12:35 pm

Hi Gents & Ladies,
I purchased a 1993 GL1500SE last fall and while going over it last week found that the windshield could not be adjusted. When I removed the front cover, I found this mess:

I was wondering if any of you folks running with these types of windshields are similarly connected? Was it a requirement of the larger (and thicker) windshield that it be installed this way, or did the previous goofball just lose his hardware?

Steve

I have had two Tulsa Tall screens, one on a 94 and a 98.

both of them adjusted up/dn like they should.

don't remember how it all looked, been too long ago.

Yup, looks like someone UPGRADED to a mess.

I had your shield in the past, the windshields hardware fit fine.
I had questionable reservations due to the higher wind loads and those 5 holes right near the shields edge but all was fine.
It is good we have dreams, for if they were real, most would not be here.

I wonder if they did that because lost the metal slide guides?

I suspect they did. I found some replacements on eBay, and they are on their way. I just wanted to verify that the heavier hardware wasn't a requirement for the taller/heavier windshield.

Thanks for the responses!!

Actually, once the Tulsa windshield is installed and secured, it does not adjust up and down like the OEM windshield.

If you want to move it, you have to loosen the attaching bolts and move the shield and then re-secure it.

I believe that in the instructions, it specifies to mount the windshield all the way up and then secure it.

That is what I remember about the Tulsa extra tall, it was not adjustable

What I remember most about the Tulsa Tall is me bumping my head on it a lot when getting on the bike. They give great wind protection when riding behind them, but they come so far over into where my head wants to be when getting on the bike, I kept hitting my helmet on it. I didn't like that and I didn't really like the way they look on mine either.

Reading the other threads on this windshield, I'm considering replacing it as a safety issue. While it does provide great wind protection for me an my passenger, I've heard that there may be an issue if you happen to be passing thru a high fog or condensation area (tunnel) and the windshield totally fogs up, causing total obstruction of view. I'm tall enough to look over it if needed, but not for any extended periods of time.

I can see where people would have issues with it smacking your helmet if you lean forward, but I haven't experienced it (yet).

I think the original poster was only asking about adjustability and proper mounting hardware.

Probably doesn't matter now but the reason the Tulsa won't adjust is because it is a much thicker material than oem. Hardware clamps down tight. Besides with a shield that tall 1 1/2 inch up or down won't make much difference anyway. I love my extra tall. Never had a problem of any kind.

Thanks for all the input everyone! It's back to the stock hardware now (thanks eBay). Had to do a little filing to get the center one to fit right, but it's now the way it should be....

Thanks all!
Steve
