Accessory terminal reads lower than Battery

Post by 1goldwingnut » Sun Apr 14, 2019 8:01 am

I searched the forum for awhile but can't find this same problem. Has anyone ever taken apart the original fuse block on a 1500? My in dash volt meter has read lower than my battery since I got the bike last year. It's hooked to the factory accessory terminal on the fuse block. The fuses read the same voltage as the battery but the accessory terminals read lower. Negative on the terminal reads near 0 resistance to ground and battery voltage to the positive on the battery. Positive accessory terminal reads .8 volts low to negative on the battery or ground on the frame. If I connect the in dash voltmeter to the battery I get the correct reading. Nothing else is hooked to the accessory terminal. Can the fuse block be taken apart and cleaned?

I realize there will always be some voltage drop. My multi meter shows a .8 difference when measuring the fuse voltage vs the accessory terminal voltage though.

Looking at the wiring diagram, it appears the + accessory terminal is connected directly to the output of the accessory terminal fuse. Have you tried cleaning the terminals where that fuse plugs in?

Since Accesssory terminal and fuse gets its power from the ignition switch, it's natural the available voltage at the switch would be a little lower at the IGN switch considering all the other loads on the switch....

I have my volt meter wired the the terminal block and it reads about .8 volts less. Coming straight from the battery you have to have a switch or relay and I didn’t want another relay. The bike has enough. I just wanted to know if/when the charging system was failing. Mine reads 13.9-14 while cruising and 14-14.2 at idle. A quick glance and I know all is good.

The fuse plug seems clean but I did spray contact cleaner on it and plugged the fuse in and out several times. I just took off the fuse block and took the back cover off of it. The insides look shiny and new actually. It's not a big deal to have the in dash meter read low. It's mainly there for reference i guess.

Well FYI, my voltmeter is wired to the accessory terminal also and it reads about .8 volts lower than a direct reading on the battery too. I know it reads that low, so I can tell if something is amiss with the charging system if it suddenly goes lower than what it normally reads.

I have exactly the same readings. On going through the posts above, it appears we ALL have the same thing. Based on that, I'd say there's nothing to worry about. The accessory terminals are fed by small wires, which have to travel a fair distance, as well as going through the ignition circuit, before getting to the terminals. It's not surprising that there's voltage drop - what may be surprising (but in hindsight, should not be) is that we all seem to have precisely the same voltage drop - 0.8 volts.

So, to 1goldwingnut I'd say...fuggedaboutit!

To add to what Mh434 said about the voltage drop... I also have a power plug (cigarette lighter type) wired to the accessory terminal. When I am charging something from that point, the voltage on the voltmeter drops quite a bit under those circumstances also. I attribute that to the small wiring feeding the accessory terminal and with the additional current draw on the circuit while charging a phone, it causes more of a voltage drop at the terminal. When I remove the charging from the circuit, the voltage returns to a normal reading.

Mother Honda spared no expense in copper, the wire gauge used in the 1500 wiring harness is no bigger than actually needed to get the job done, and no more. So there's voltage drops everywhere....

On the other hand, If it was wired with 14 ga throughout, the bike would weigh 150 pounds more!

Most of the time volt meter have an adjustment switch to calibrate the meter. The difference in reading can be there.
