Cam belt question....

Post by Psycheonabike » Sat Jun 08, 2019 9:51 am

When changing cam belts what's the procedure if the pullys are not aligned when crank is at TDC?

Do the pullys move independently to the crank? Ie. with crank at TDC and belt off, line up pullys then fit belt?

If not how?

Thanks...

OK got it. Page 7-14 in the 1100 service manual should help you get on track. Be sure to back off valve adjustments to prevent bending of the valves on rotation.``````````````

Rotate the engine one full revolution. Bet it aligns after.

They will...to a point. You can rotate the cam pulleys some, but at some point they will attempt to open a valve on a cylinder that has a piston in the way, and you will feel resistance (more than just the valve spring resistance). Don't try to force it past this point.

Ok, so all done and boy was that timing out!!!

But, here's the thing. All I needed was someone to say:

"The marks to go by are the raised ones that are also inline with the arrows"

I'd also been using some incorrect intructions regarding balancing the carbs. Once done correctly I could see how out of sync they were.

Moral being, be careful which instructions you follow as they may not be correct and I think I was lucky not to have caused some damage.

Thanks for all your help to date, this is a great forum!
