Oil coming out of tach

Post by Austin97 » Sun Jun 09, 2019 1:04 pm

Hey there, I have oil coming out of my tach cable end, I found the leak whIle riding down the road and getting oil spit all over my face...I pulled over and found my front fork all wet and oil coming from the tach gauge...I assume there is a seal or something that has worn out in the fuel pump area but I don't know...any ideas?

I've had this discussion before..
There should be a bit of oil in the tach housing. If not,the worm gear would soon wear out..However there should not be a overflow of it.
The end of the cam just behind the worm gear is the "bearing"..there is not a "O" ring or seal there of any kind.Nothing would fit over the worm gear.
What one does see is that the oil that leaks from around the shaft gets slung to the worm gear and (read carefully) the excess (just like the valve assembly) drains back into the case.
Now..having oil that far up the cable means two possible things..
Either that drain passage is plugged or the crankase breather isn't breathing well keeping positive pressure in the case and not allowing the gravity return of the oil.
The canister needs to be drained and cleaned every oil change or so.
Or if there's no canister, the case vent is plugged.
I'd lean toward the crankcase breather plugged if you pull the cover off and find little oil in there from setting overnight.

There is a seal where the tach cable goes into the fuel pump housing. You have to pull the housing off to change it.
OIL SEAL (4.8X14.5X5) (ARAI)

This is true.It will keep oil from weeping on to the tach housing.
This fellow has oil all the way up to the tach.

This is true but where else would the oil come from except up through the cable?

The oil is filling the tach housing and flowing up the cable to the tach.
