Added a 2nd bike.. sorta

Post by Happytrails »

I've always wanted a hacked motorcycle. Came close to buying a goldwing with a sidecar but ended up in the hospital instead  So I came home on this. Having a 3rd wheel is pretty fun and 2wd isn't bad either :)

Interesting machine.... What IS it? :?: :?:

2WD? How's that work? Differential? Sprague clutches in the axles?

When I bought my 1500 the PO was working on the clutch for a 2WD Dirt Bike! Hydraulic motor on the front wheel driven by a pump in the rear drive train.

Its a Ural, russian sidecar motorcycle.

For the 2wd there is a driveshaft from the final drive to the sidecar wheel can be engaged or disengaged by a lever.

A 2wd dirt bike sounds intense.

Looks cool. Is it difficult to handle when someones riding the sidecar?

Its a little easier to handle with someone in the sidecar. There are some weird handling things going on to riding with a sidecar but overall its much easier than riding on 2 wheels. :)

I tried driving one when I was in the Philippines back in around 2011 and their sidecar is a lot heavier even without a passenger. I haven't tried one like yours.

Hey Happy, were you by chance in Erie, PA a couple weeks ago on that rig? I was on my bike going into Autozone and a rig just like yours pulled in and parked a couple spaces down from me. Rarely see a sidecar around here, let alone 2 in the same parking lot. Nice looking setup you have there, love the colors.

I live here but no I didn't go to Roar this year. I had just got my bike up and running and wasn't quite up to riding with that many people around yet. I'm gaining more confidence as time goes on.

I have some in-laws in your neck of the woods, kinda, Fox Chapel...

Its nice up in Erie I need to take a ride up there. I'd like to go to roar on the shore, have been to Thunder in the Valley and that was pretty good too. I just went to Ride for Kids in Cranberry, it was surprising how many sidecar rigs showed up. You'll get the hang of the sidecar pretty quick, I've only been riding one for a year now and it feels comfortable.

Yes Fox Chapel isn't far from me. I used to see a doctor over there. Its a lot nice not being in the city with the traffic and everybody in a hurry.

Ride for Kids 2019, maybe a dozen sidecar rigs showed up

I've always thought Urals were super cool. Saw one for the first time in a retail store in a high end shopping mall (totally random) and I was blown away. They've been kinda on my radar since then, just never wanted to pony up for the cost! Maybe one day I'll add one to my garage.

They are fun to ride but it has its pro's and con's. It looks like your in prime Ural country there HQ is in your neck of the woods. From video's I've seen it looks like there are some fun places around you where you can take one offroad.

Some Ural dealers will let you take one for a demo ride, might be worth checking out just to sit on one and go for a free ride! Being in WA you could probably find a nice used Ural locally for a great price. Used Urals may cost about the same as a used Goldwing.

As odd as it sounds Ural sales seem to be going strong even with Covid 19 hurting so many other businesses like Tesla or AMC. Doesn't seem like it effected Ural sales although they are saying the supply line has been hurt so production may be slowed down. Some parts are from Italy, brembo brakes, ducati ignition, wheels, domino controls.

Nice! I'll have to check that out. My wife and I just took our Jeep out to some forest service roads last weekend, and ended up getting to a place where we couldn't go any further. Too wide lol but with a Ural... ;)
