Stopping oil leak at oil level viewing window

Post by BevoBowen » Wed Jun 12, 2019 8:09 pm

My barn find ‘76 had an oil leak at the level viewing window. I cleaned it with solvent, and having ascertained the leak was from the bushing/seal that surrounds the inspection screw for the wiper, I cleaned the area with solvent. Very clean! Then, I used a small pointer to apply Versachem brand Super Clear gasket maker around the screw and the rubber seal around it. I let it sit over night. Then, I used an old brake bleeder nipple rubber (cleaned!) and filled it with the same gasket goo and pressed it over the inspection screw. I let that sit for 3 days. Went riding, and ever since, no more leak! I cannot use the wiper, or maybe I could, but I’m afraid it would start leaking again. I had first experimented with how much oil to add after oil/filter change, so I’m confident the oil level I see is enough. I am sure any clear silicon gasket goo brand will work. This beat removing engine/splitting the cases to replace the window, plus I can still view the level. Hope this helps somebody.
