Need motorcycle, trying to find financing or other option

Post by zeoran » Mon Jun 24, 2019 3:00 pm

I'm a single parent in SoCal. I recently got a new job that I love but it's 40 miles away from me and my commute is hell each day. Unfortunately, I sold my '82 Interstate a long time ago. I found a '92 Goldwing on Craigslist that I'm in love with. It's got less than 5,000 miles on it, perfect condition, barely driven, single owner for only $4,500. But I don't have that kind of cash lying around. In fact, being a single parent at a brand new job after 2 years unemployed, I don't have any cash lying around. I had hoped that I could get a title loan based on my car that would cover it, but my car has depreciated a lot faster than I thought it had. It's only worth $2k-$2,500. I've tried every loan/financing option I can think of and contacted every friend I have and then some. A motorcycle would save me hours per day in commute, hundreds a month in gas and would allow my son who's 17 to use the car. Unfortunately, due to a bunch of medical bills from my near-death in 2014, I have really poor credit. But I'm making good money at my new job, don't have any credit cards (I've never had one) and I don't care how high the interest rate is.

Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

God bless,

~Mark

Do you own your house? If you do you could take out a home equity loan.

I actually managed to scrounge up the money to buy the 2002 ST1100 I was looking at. I also spent hundreds on a new windshield, helmet, jacket, gloves, etc. to get myself ready to ride every day. I started riding to work and was thoroughly enjoying the faster commute, much lower gas bill and lack of wear/tear on my old car. However, Murphy's Law was not to be denied. After only 3 weeks of riding, I was making a tricky freeway interchange where you need to make a lane change at the top of a standard freeway interchange. I was at the top of the curve and was right at the part where the merge hit and I glanced into my right-hand mirror to see if the lane was clear to move into and the next thing I knew I was rolling over and over again on the asphalt. According to the CHP report, there was a significant raised piece of asphalt that shouldn't have been there (thank you Caltrans) and apparently I hit it and I wasn't expecting it and I hit it in just the right way to make me instantly lose control of the bike without any chance to recover. All the damage to the bike is on the left side, I came away with 4 fractured ribs and tons of scrapes. It really depresses me that I only got 3 wonderful weeks out of something I was so heavily financially and emotionally invested in. I'll still be making payments on the loan I had to get to buy the bike for a while. I don't know if I'm going to be able to repair her...the cost of the repairs might be more than what I paid to buy her. I only got about $500 of the $2,500 I was trying to get with my GoFundMe, now that's ballooned into far more than $2,500 in the extras, plus lost income from time off from work, medical expenses, etc. I'm still surprised that an 800lb bike went down so easily and quickly. I've been riding for years on my Goldwing and while this was quite a bit different, it wasn't necessarily 'bad' different.

That sucks. Bigger they are, easier they fall.

At the very least, I need the left fairing piece and left mirror and attachments. Anything else is awesome. I'm linking the pictures I took so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

Surely there's some claim can be made against the highway department or similar for this raised tarmac that shouldn't be there? Your insurance?
Every day's a school day....What have you learned today?

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way here in California. If we had that ability, tens of thousands of us would be suing them right now for all the damn potholes and other major issues with the streets/highways that cause undo wear/tear/damage to our vehicles. And since my insurance didn't cover the bike itself, only liability, they have no vested interest in going after the state agency responsible for making the roads smooth.
