Backfires from exhaust.

Post by MikeCoulombe » Tue Jul 02, 2019 9:55 pm

Brought home a new to me 1983 GL1100A, been sitting in a shed for 9 years.
The current owner said they had it running badly a year ago.
So I got it running badly after repairing the starter.
Loading up the right bank with fuel and backfire through the exhaust. Pulled the plugs plenty of fire.
Pulled the carbs really clean inside except one low speed jet fell out in my hand resemble installed still the same.
So here's the question, why is the engine still backfiring?
Well guess what, and this is a little embarrassing, turns out the 1 and 3 plug wires were switched, not by me but I guess I shouldn't have assumed any previous owner would have installed the wires correctly.
Long story short and voila she runs like a champ now.

Well the moral of the story is, always check the simple stuff.

Good job.
It is difficult to get power out of the exhaust back into the engine..Unless you want to convert it to a pulse drive.
Did you replace the timing belts yet ??
