Progressive 416 shocks needing service

Post by 4given » Wed Jul 10, 2019 6:56 am

I am starting a new thread hoping for some ideas, since there has been an eerie silence on this subject since my last post. I apologize if I’m being a pain. Back in November of ‘18 I found a pair of 416’s online that were supposed to have been relatively new but tried on a HD and taken off. I wanted them for my ‘96 Apencade. They arrived in remarkably good condition including the hose kit and fit perfectly. Much to my disappointment when I pumped them up one of them was leaking air out of the top. They work great even without air pressure but I’m still trying to find someone who does repair work on them since Progressive discontinued them and no longer will service them. Any advice is greatly appreciated. It looks like my options are as follows: (1) use them as they are; (2) look for another set of 416’s; (3) replace them with something else suitable; (4) find someone who would repair them. I tried the repair kit but it didn’t fix the air leak out the top of the shock and they both looked brand new when I had them apart.

Thanks,
Dan

Three or more years ago, I found a set of seals for decent price, I didn't need them then or now, but I keep them on hand as spares. I am pretty sure there is a seal at the top of the air chamber like a O-ring.

Anyway, part number on my "set" is Progressive 76-5041. Mine are on a trike and except for length, looked exactly like those I put on my 1200 years ago. The kits appear to have gone up in value since I bought mine?, maybe they are getting rarer?

On the bottom of the blisterpak is the number 30-5041. If you use the number 30-5041 in a search, Amazon has them as well as do many others, some cheaper too?

Thanks for the reply Crystal. I tried the repair kit but it didn’t stop the leaking of air out of the top of the shock.

Gotta be a knicked O-ring seal or just a rough seal surface. I've had two sets 416s on GLs, never leaked.

Ok, Thanks again. When riding season is over, I’ll pull them off again and see if I can find anything I missed. They work great and the bike handles good. They just won’t hold air when pumped up. I was hoping to find someone I could send them to if I can’t solve the problem.

Titled "Air Shock Seal Removal And Replacement". It's a jpeg. Copy to a file on your pc, and enlarge it to make easier to read. It explains.
