Old Car Transmission sound?

Post by Tusler » Fri Jul 12, 2019 11:03 pm

Hi, my 1997 1500SE makes a sound like an old car does when you put it in gear and slowly accelerate, it does it in 1st and 2nd, I don't notice it in the upper gears unless I slow down to lugging speed then I might hear it. A friend said it sounded like a worn countershaft in an old car trans but neither of us know about bike trans.
On a different note since I bought this bike a year ago it has always been difficult to shift and hard to get into neutral it has 78000 miles on it.
Thanks for the input.

pour in 4 oz of Sea Foam into the crankcase.
ride it 100 miles and drain the oil.

get some synthetic oil, "Rotella T4 will be fine" and use that for a while.
it is just about the cheapest oil on Walmart's shelf. under $20 bux last week.

I suspect that will "fix it".

FWIW, I am using Rotella T6 in 5w40 in my 1800.

I am using Rotella T4 in 10w30 in my riding lawn tractor, with a 23 hp Briggs 'n Stratton engine...... funny thing that. it used to use enough oil, that I had to top it off every 3 to 4 hours

with the synthetic oil, it just simply quit using oil !!!
we have mowed our 6 acres 3 times now, and never added any oil.
I check it before each mowing w/o fail.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am coming up on my next oil change so i will try the seafoam cleaning. I have been using 20-50 syn cause of the 106+ temps out here in the summer in the winter I run 10-40 syn.
