'81 GL1100 Ignition questions

Post by sacruickshank » Sun Aug 04, 2019 7:04 am

Recently picked up an '81 GL1100 non-runner 18k miles, sitting for years/decades, and no service history. There was some black goo on the left timing belt cover which I traced back to the ignition circuit. Unfortunately I found the source of the goo in the attached pic of the ignition module.

Which raises the following questions:
1.) They are still producing a spark. Are they shot or still usable?
1.a) If still usable, can I/should I refill the insulator with some material to encapsulate them again? How?
1b.) If toast, are there any decent aftermarket solutions or am I paying $250 for a pair?
2.) Does the melted goo indicate some other issue I should track down?

These are famous for dripping black goo, there's gobs of it on the frame under the ignition units on my 1100. Doesn't seem to hurt them, they just keep on sparking... Don't worry about it. :D

If it really bothers you, clean as best as possible then repot them. The black stuff is to keep vibration damage down.
I think on one,I filled it with Jb Weld..Another with black silicone...
