Mechanical fuel pump on gl 1100 leaks!

Post by Hansmann » Tue Aug 06, 2019 6:32 am

I have a small question that someone in the forum can help with or direct me to the thread that discuses my problem. My fuel pump is leaking  It seems like it is the seal/gasket the separates the top of the pump cover from the main pump housing. The seal between the tachometer body and pump is nice and tight. The quick fix is to purchase a new pump but I wonder if other options are more feasible such as overhaul kit for the old mechanical pump or retrofit a new less expensive electrical pump? Any bits of advice are received with gratitude.
Kind Regards,
Hans

Hello Hans. Unfortunately there are no rebuild kits available for our GL1100 fuel pumps. The diaphragm that's probably leaking on your pump wasn't even available as a separate part from Honda. A replacement GL1100 pump is about your best option for keeping the mechanical pump. I've never investigated the possibility of substituting an electric fuel pump but it has been done by some other members here. WingAdmin probably has designed one that will work like a charm and not cost much either.

Hi Good Hondog,
Thanks a lot for your reply. Too bad that there isn’t any repair kit! I have seen some of the electrical pump systems that have been retrofitted which seem pretty elegant. However, I am I bit orthodox when it comes to my motorcycle and I am mostly in favour of the mechanical fuel pump over a retrofit electrical

There is a thread on possibly this website, or maybe it was ngwclub, detailing (with pictures) the dismantling/rebuilding of a GL1100 fuel pump. They fabricated a new diaphragm themselves, and as far as I know it worked for them.

When my pump gave out last summer, I bought a new one off eBay and was back on the road within the week :P

Fuel pump is CHEAP. Mine did the same thing. Bought a new one and now NO MORE WORRIES. Just replace it. They are still available, so it's worth it.
