HELP I need tire conversion

Post by edr421 » Tue Aug 06, 2019 10:18 am

I have an 83 gl1100I with a richland roadster kit on it.(like 16" training wheels) I am wanting to put a regular car tire on the rear of the bike. Can anyone convert the 140/90-16-71H to a car tire size. I know several people have done it since the rear tire is used for power only. Any suggestions would be appreciated , I have contacted several tire stores in our area and noone can help.,

You need to find a new tire store. It is easy to convert tire sizes, especially for a tire store.
I suspect the problem you have is governed by lawyers, not tire technicians. The 140/90R16 is NOT a popular automobile tire size. They likely don't stock anything close. Plus, and here's the rub, their manufacturers have selected and tested their tire sizes for automotive uses. And have certified them to the car manufacturer's specifications. If they sell tires for a non-certified usage, who is liable for failure, damage, or customer dissatisfaction??
Check the forums for guys that have done it, and judge the results. In the end you will probably have to take some risk, and look for independent tire shops who will accommodate you. Good luck.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no auto tires made that are the correct diameter (inner and outer), and are narrow enough to fit between the swingarm of the GL1100.

You can't find a conversion as there isn't a ct that will fit in the 1100 swingarm. It's too narrow. A 140/90 is the widest tire that barely has 1/4" clearance to the driveshaft and the brake arm on the other side.
