Gear indicators

Post by Ed Brock » Thu Aug 08, 2019 6:30 am

I sure miss the gear indicator on my Suzuki's. That said I'm sure people have installed gear indicators on their Goldwing's. Where can I find out information on gear indicators for Goldwing's?
Thanks Ed

I really don't see the point of them on a five speed gearbox. There is an indicator for top - overdrive, which is where my 1500 spends most of its time. You surely don't need an indicator to tell that you are in 1st gear, which leaves only three to remember.

Not all GL1500s have the ability to support a gear indicator. The early ones had switches that only recognized neutral, 4th and 5th. Newer ones have switches that are wired for all gears. If you have an older GL1500 and want to do this, you will need to replace the gear shift indicator behind the front engine cover.
Just order one for a 2000 - it will fit earlier bikes.

khspe2,
The bike is a 1998 SE model. Only 30,000 miles. All original, no mods. In the process of a couple of mods. Like volt meter, Satelite compass, and passenger heated gear plug-in with a phone charger and a GPS. I'm the second registered owner.

Here is what I'm installing on my 95 GW: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RJ ... UTF8&psc=1
Has "N" AND "R" indications as well. The connector is located directly behind the RT side reflector, and the closest one to it. It's a 6 pin connector with, get this.....5 wires. 1st gear doesn't have a contact, just N-5. The 88-89 had N,3,4,OO(5), 90 and on, has N-2,3,4,OO(5) contacts in the sensor. You'll need you service manual wire diagram to know which wire is each gear, and you'll need a 12vdc power supply to check each wire for the new indicator. (the short, black wire is + ) Right now, I'm trying to find the male and female connectors so I can "plug-n-play" rather than tapping into each wire.

I figure that if nothing is lit, then I must be in 1st gear!

Thanks for the information. The Amazon site you mentioned is not available now, can you supply the units brand name or part number?

The Amazon product number is listed in that link, or you can just search for "Autone Motorcycle Gear Indicator".

If you copy/paste that amazon link into the address bar of a browser, then edit it by removing the smile. from the address, it will work just fine.
