1995 GL1500SE stalls when put in gear

Post by Rocky1down » Fri Aug 09, 2019 10:17 pm

Kickstand light on when down off when up.
Reverse light off when engage
New reverse switch installed
Bike starts in neutral will not start with clutch pulled in in gear
Bike starts in neutral but when shifted into gear stops, reverse light flashes on when key is turned but then goes out
Any ideas? Thanks

Kick stand light on when down, , , sounds correct, , , Kick stand light off when up, , , sounds correct, , But it sure seems strange to have a kick-stand on a trike, , is that a common practice for trikers???

This sounds like the culprit. Could you have it wired incorrectly?

Does is roll with engine off, in gear, and clutch pulled in?

Bad side-stand switch. Three wires, Green (ground) Yellow/Black (light on dash) and Green/White. Connects Green with Yellow/black when down, Green with Green/White when up.

Side stand switch provides ground to the side stand light when down, when side stand up provides ground to the Clutch lever switch (for starting in gear) and the reverse control box (to not kill the engine when you shift into gear).

I bet the side stand "up" contacts are bad. If you unplug the sidestand switch and ground the green/white wire I bet that solves the issue.

Since it's a trike, I'd just cut the green/white at the side stand switch itself, connect it to ground somewhere and be done with it. On a bike I'd replace the switch.

If you leave the green and yellow/black wires still connected to the switch your side stand light on the dash will still work.

Why a side stand on a trike anyway?

Remove it and the switch, Splice green with green/white wire, tape all three wires up (the spliced grn & grn/wht wires and then separately, the other wire), tuck away.

I knew one fellow subbed a toggle to trick the trike to act like stand was down as a theft deterrent, LOL.
Useless unless you leave key in ignition and a sign saying "STEAL ME" on seat … just saying … IMHO.

Thanks for everyone’s help. We cut the wires on the side stand switch and grounded the green wire.
Just got back from a test ride on a beautiful Ohio day.
My husband and a friend installed the trike kit themselves so that’s why the sidestand switch was still active.
