1992 GL1500A cranks but wont fire up sometimes

Post by Starcraftstarcruiser » Wed Aug 14, 2019 7:51 pm

I recently bought a Gl1500 and it starts on 1st click most of the time but when I take a ride up to the store it just cranks and wont fire when i try to start it up upon leaving. I let it sit for awhile (an Hour) and it then starts right up and starts on several test starts so i jump on it ride to the park turn it off and it wont fire up and same thing let it sit an hour and its fine. Its cranking great, battery seems to be doing well. What the heck im ready to get rid of it. Any ideas?

I'm thinking "excessive Pressure in gas tank", , , , if the "vent" on the gas cap isn't working as it should, especially at 27 yr. old, gunk and rust will inhibit it from working right. A quick and easy fix could be as simple as soaking (submerging) that gas cap in Seafoam overnight, then blow it clean with compressed air hose.

When it won't start, open the gas cap door and loosen the gas cap, , if you hear a "whoosh", that a strong indicator that the venting isn't working well and the cap needs cleaning.

If that doesn't solve the problem, , we'll get to the bottom of the problem by talking about a fuel filter problem, or shut-off valve "tear" in the diaphragm, and so on, , , ,

It's not that it builds up pressure in the tank, but rather a vacuum. If the vent in the gas cap clogs up, no air can enter the tank to replace the fuel used...presto, a strong vacuum, too much for the fuel pump to overcome.

Most people have success with taking the cap off, soaking it for a day or two in solvent, and blowing it out with compressed air.

If that isn't the problem after all, I'd say your starter solenoid is on its way out, and only connecting occasionally. If that's the case, replacement is the only option.

Thank you for the help, it was not the gas cap, tested that theory and did not start still. It turned out to be the kill switch. I popped the top off the throttle side and put both wires on the same side for a constant connection. Took it out today (between florida summer storms) stopped at several places and it started up first click every time solving the issue. I think this bike and I are getting along a bit better now. :)
