clicking from driveshaft?

Post by jtcr85@gmail.com » Fri Aug 30, 2019 3:49 am

Gday
Just bought a running red 75 gl1000 with 32k miles in pretty good nick minus a few little things. its got a vetter fairing and a carb mod, a few little things like the horn not working, and the rear brake master cylinder needs a new seal kit, i plan to eventually return it to original, but anyway, I had it shipped to me with only the photos and the sellers word as an assurance of its quality, including me asking "is there anything mechanically wrong with it" to which he replied "no" -which was probably a silly idea.
.....Anyway....
when i roll the bike forwards in neutral there is a obvious repetitive clicking noise that comes from the rear of the bike. i have not tried riding it yet because of this. Ive been doing research on forums and it seems like the universal joint is the most likely culprit? they are about $100-200 on ebay second hand, and before I go ahead and buy one, i wanted to check if it could be anything else? and also, is there any extra things i need to know before i throw in a second hand driveshaft off ebay?
thanks.
Joe

I believe I'd locate the source of the clicking before spending money on parts not needed.

Second that. If you're afraid to ride it without knowing what it is, you have to tear it down anyway. May as well look it over before buying anything.

I "third" that sentiment, too often people start throwing new parts at a problem before identifying what the problem actually is, wasting a lot of time and $.

Sensible to check it out before riding; you could get stranded.
The noise could be the U/J (most likely). But it could also be the splined coupling at the other end of the drive shaft or within the final drive with worn splines in there.
Put the biker on the centre stand if it still has one, or block it up if not and turn the rear wheel to trry and determine where the noise is coming from first.
First off, peel back the rubber boot between the swing arm and the engine that protects the U/J. Put the bike in gear and rock the rear wheel back and forth. You will soon see or hear wear in the joint. No wear at all is acceptable. The early 75-77 shafts are weak around the joint, the later 78-79 shafts have more meat around it.
If the U/J proves sound, the rear wheel and final drive may have to come off, but check the joint first.
'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

( Seriously, you haven't read all 115 pages of my http://www.wingovations.com website ?? )

Thankyou for the replies.
No I won't be doing any riding til I get to the bottom of it. It clicks while rolled in neutral then when on the center stand it makes horrible grinding noises when the wheel is spun. I'm thinking the u joint but I've ordered a complete second hand driveshaft with final gear for 120$ from eBay but it's going to take a month to arrive from the states. I'll let you know how I go
