$200 GL1000 barn find

Post by Ejedmo5 » Tue Sep 03, 2019 3:11 pm

Hey guys new to the forum and to Goldwings but I fell in love with this bike when I saw it at an auction and will soon have it up and running. It’s a 1979 GL1000 with ~10k original miles. I knocked the dust off it today but will not be able to touch it till I get back from my trip. Curious what people’s thoughts are on this deal.

Has the fairings on it and saddle bags not pictured all color matched were these an option from the factory I thought these were all ‘naked’ wings. Anyways would love to have it picked apart for what’s not factory because my goal is to return it to as original as possible. And yes I know the seat is not.

And for those curious I found it and a kz1000 at an auction got both for $200

There were NO factory bags on the 75-79 GL100s.

The dealer installed whatever brand they sold.

Some used the Hondaline setup while others did not.

Seat and crash bars are not factory.

Can't see much else in these pics.

Both bikes for $200 - you won the lottery...

Congratulations - get it running first -

first item - timing belts

see if the motor turns - if not locked up - replace the timing belts

Did I mention - replace the timing belts :D

Thank you, I remember reading that these were kick start along with electric start but it was removable and stored else where. I’m off to England today and didn’t have much time to play with it but where is it kept and where does it attach. If this is obvious I’m sure I’ll figure it out when I’m home.

The fairing will probably be removed, although I’ve never had a fairinged bike so I may try it out. This is one I’m planning on keeping to ride.

And yeah timing belts lol

Kick starter disappeared with the 77 models.

If you remove the faring you will need a bunch of additional parts to make it road worthy.

Luckily the guy included literally a crate of all the original parts for both bikes so I should have it all, but priority one is getting it running. But good to know on the kick starter would have gone mental looking for it.
