Hello everyone In March of 2017 I joined this site because I was about to pick up my "new to me" GoldWing, a 1986 Interstate with 25000 miles. I received a lot of good advice on how to proceed with my project, unfortunately, as does so often happen, life reared it's sometimes ugly head and I had to put the Wing on the back burner. Well I finally got back at it...

This is what it looked like the day I got her home...

Started rebuilding the carbs yesterday.






And found a couple bad diaphragms.


Any ideas on where I can get some new carb diaphragms? Randakks doesn't have any, ebay has them in the UK and China. Do you think the Chinese ones are OK?

The diaphragms are no longer available from Honda but here is a link to a company that makes replacement diaphragms for carbs. These are just the rubber diaphragms not the complete slide assembly. I, just last month, put these on my gl1500. So far they work great. You have to be very careful and fast when gluing them on the slide as the superglue gel sets up pretty fast. Also there are complete slides available from SaberCycle but they DON'T work because the diaphragms are too thick. Just a warning in case you happen across them. Good luck with your rebuild.

Carb #3 had a some green slime in it. Here is a pic of a stain it left in the float bowl.


Any ideas what may have caused that?

I've seen it as a result of ethanol-induced corrosion of brass/copper fittings and jets.

Got my new carb diaphragms today, now i just need to figure out how to attach them to the slides...

The old one is on the left, new on the right.


Old on top of new.


The new one appears to have a smaller diameter hole for the slide, I'm assuming because the old one is aged and less pliable and got stretched when I removed it from the slide...

The trick is getting the bead on the diaphragm stuffed into the tiny space between the tan plastic rings on the slide.




I ended up carefully using my thumbnail, slowly working my way around the slide and it seems to have worked pretty well. And I only had to do it twice to get the hole at the bottom of the slide to line up with the hole on the tab at the large end of the diaphragm.


The first time it moved as I was stuffing it in...

Looks just like brand new rebuilt.

Are the rubber boots between the carb and the intake tubes removable? Or are they permanently attached?

Removable, Heat them up some to soften the rubber, it is old and hard. Maybe boil them... :lol:

Thanks Denver, I should have been clearer, I have them off the carb, but do they come off of the intake tube?
I found some info on soaking them in a mixture consisting of oil of wintergreen, which will be here on Wednesday, and xylene to soften and renew the rubber cuz they are hard as iron. But the state of California has deemed that it's residents aren't capable of using xylene in a safe, sane and ecological manner, so it is unavailable here. Some people have had similar results by substituting isopropyl alcohol for the xylene, so I'm gonna give that a try.

I cleaned up the plenum a little yesterday.

Parts fiche doesn't show the rubber couplers as separate parts so leads me to believe they are not readily removable from the intake tubes. Any reason why?

I just thought i should take them off before I soaked them, But I guess that's not gonna happen.

What's the consensus here on painting carbs? I cleaned them up the best I could, but they still look kinda ratty on the outside. It's like the aluminum is stained from something.
