82 Interstate Garmin GPS Install

Post by thegambler » Tue Sep 10, 2019 2:31 pm

I had an old Garmin nuvi 265W sitting in my desk drawer for years, and I had the thought to mount it to my 82 Interstate. It looked like it would fit between the voltmeter and the radio readout, and it turns out it was a perfect fit.

I then removed the dummy plate filling the space where the GPS will go, and cut a slot out of the corner where the power plugs in. Unfortunately, Garmins only work with the Garmin power supply, so I couldn't use a standard mini USB. I then wired in a 12V plug inside the glove box and ran the car charger cable to it.

And here's the result:

That looks great, like it came from the factory that way!

It wouldn't work on an Aspy with CB, as that blank spot is where the voltmeter goes:

I had mine attached to the handlebars (seen in the picture), as that was the only place I could find a good spot. I used a U-bolt and some welding stock to fabricate a mount.
