Rear Shock Mounts: Nuts!

Post by radfordgoldwingresto » Tue Nov 19, 2019 5:39 pm

Hey guys: I'm working on an 83 Interstate and the knucklehead who had it before me went over it and removed a bunch of parts. I no longer have the nuts that hold the rear shocks onto the frame. I've searched Clymer and other sources and can't find what type of nut is supposed to hold on the shocks. I think that the threads are already messed up. They look like they are a finer thread than a standard metric bolt. OEM Honda and Partzilla show them on the diagram but don't list the part in the itemized list. (https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda ... k-absorber :note number 19) Any advice? Where I should look for replacements or how I should fixed the threads.

Measure the threads, and if they are just lightly damaged, chase them with a die. These will be JIS fine thread metric, not typical Euro pitch. Looks like a standard acorn nut is what you will need. Any good industrial hardware store should have that. If you don't have one local you can order from McMaster Carr or for all things metric there is Maryland Metrics. However, while McMaster has a great website Maryland's is pretty aweful. A motorcycle salvage yard might be the easiest way to get what you need. If the threads are totally trashed either weld on new studs or cut new undersized threads is whatever size is a close fit, whether imperial or metric.

Thanks! That's a huge help. I knew something wonky was going on with the threads.

I found the nuts I need. I do have to chase the threads. I can get a tap and die set but I'll have to purchase the die. Do you know how to measure the threads or what the measurements are? JIS...there are a ton of metric threads that are JIS.

According to this site it is an M10 x 1.25 fine pitch. http://www.stainlessautomotivefastening ... ts_id=9127
