GL 1000 HONDA Decal

Post by GL1000K1dan » Thu Nov 21, 2019 2:11 pm

Is it possible to get hold of the original Decal that is stuck to the top leaf of the dummy fuel tank. It's the decal that is positioned around the fuel gauge.
My painted parts went to the spray shop and the decal was removed. The paint sprayer (in the UK) could not source a replacement, so my beautifully sprayed dummy tank top cover is now minus the decal.
He sent the original decal back to me but it's not in pristine condition, however, it could still useable with some skilled pre-fitting TLC. At this time, it would be a shame to try and reapply it, as is, to the newly painted part unless absolutely necessary.
The colour of my bike is Antares Red and the original decal looks like a dark purple colour and, possibly, faded from its original colour.
It looks as though it's a very thin metal decal which, I suppose, would not do any harm if I were not to re attach it. However, I would like the bike to retain its original appearance.
I have seen, on ebay, a black vinyl decal but this would be a very last resort purchase.
Any thoughts guys ?

There is an ebayer that re-manufactures the foil type decals. I bought some from him a year or two ago. He's in Spain (check the location for any eBay decals to get the right ebayer). I'll have a look to see if I can find him and post here if I do. The decals are very good quality.

Just had a look and his eBay user name is heilorojo. I don't see the tank top decal listed, but send him an enquiry. He may be able to get them.

I found a cheap false tank on ebay and was able to gently remove the metal decal, then reglue it to my top leaf. I've cannibalized various other bits from it too, so was a good avenue for me.

Have received the original metal decal back from the paint sprayers. They managed to keep it in good condition so now I have the original and an aftermarket decal.
So the plan is to reattach the original. Question now is: What type of glue would be suitable ?
My concern is that the glue may react with the new paint job.

You can get very thin double-sided adhesive tape or, as I have used in the past, a thin smear of clear silicone sealant. Good old Evo Stik would work, but not sure if the solvent in it (which evaporates) would react with the new paint.
