Popping noise

Post by in2it » Sun Nov 24, 2019 7:33 am

Im looking at buying a 2002 Wing... the owner says it has a popping noise at times coming from the wing and a vibration ... I haven't heard it personally nor drove it ... Im sure in my opinion that it maybe coming from the drivetrain... but I have to ask the group there thoughts on this subject for you have much more experience than I

I have the 2002, and the cam chain is very noisy, makes a loud whine.
in 114,000 miles it has not broken anything.
I just ignore it.

Popping Noise?

Possibilities that need to be ridden to observe:
  • back firing?
Frame crack? this will take a very close inspection of the frame... 2001-2005 bikes had the potential to experience a cracked frame.... most should have been repaired by now.... my bike never had a crack
Suspension is too tight, needs maintenance
Rear suspension low on oil, has air in the pressure cylinder
Plastic is not secured somewhere, saddle bags? Trunk?
If you are NOT allowed to test ride this bike, keep looking, and get a 2006 or newer.
No point in buying something that already has a few clues that something is not right.

How far would you go to buy a bike? Is Virginia or Memphis to much out of the way? What price range are you working with?

Hmmmm..... Well Memphis is closer to me... guess my limit would be 400 miles give or take... and price range would be within my limited budget... being retired and just having Social Security ... do have some savings but not deep pockets... I look in the for sale sections hoping to find a diamond in the rough or someone wanting to sell for there retiring from riding...I'm looking in the six cylinder class ... or a mint 1100 or 1200 Aspencada ....yes I know more than me are in the market looking for a good used Wing ...well you ask ... and yes I rambled on... but I hoped I answered your question

Popping noise and vibration is a vague description.
When is the noise happening is a question to ask before you go any distance to see it.

The popping noise could be a number of things from exhaust popping if aftermarket mufflers were put on, less packing/defusers means more noise heard, popping happens on stock mufflers but it is muffled more.

Or it could possibly be popping out of gear(ghost shifting happens from short shifts in operator error and wears shift forks and the gears), bad transmission.

The vibration could be linked to a bad transmission.
Or it could be a bad u-joint(mine went on my 08 at 78,000 miles). It could be felt under acceleration.

More information will be needed.

Personally I would stay away from anything older than an 05 wing. Frame cracking is a problem even if the recall has been completed. They are cracking in places that Honda have fixed under the recall. Take a real close at the frame behind the passenger foot rests and other places that it is welded at.

I know of two Wings for sale, and if you're interested, I can send you a PM with the info. One 2001 about $6000, and a 2003 for $6399. Both appear to be in beautiful condition and well maintained, and both are red. The 2003 is in Nashville, not Memphis...my bad, and is well dressed, it's around $6000. The 2001 is the other, and is immaculate.

It could be something in the final drive going South. Actually a rather common thing, but not that expensive or difficult to repair. Now as to the 98, that's low mileage and the 1500's are great bikes. The trade offs between the 1800 and the 1500, 1800 is fuel injected and the 1500 has carbs. The 1500 is also heavier, and parts and service become harder to obtain with age. A friend of mine has both, and I've never seen him ride the 1800. Every ride we go on he's riding the 1500, and it's got around 300,000 miles on it. You won't loose if you choose to go that route. Good luck.

The 97-2000 gl1500s were good years. Honda upgraded the gears and shift forks in those years. It should last way past 500,000 miles with proper preventive maintenance.

Three years ago when shopping for a bike I was looking at 1500's and early 1800's. I decided the 1800's were still a little "spendy" for me and settled on the '93 1500 I have now.

Never looked back. Very happy with the '93. And still low miles, ~51K, I figure it will outlast ME!

And knowing what I know now about the early 1800's I think I made the right choice.

I agree D W ... you can only ride what you can afford... yes who wouldn't love to throw there leg over a new ride (know the feeling back in 78) I feel confident with the 98... I'm just itching to see it and take it for a test spin... now debating on a pull behind camper/tent or pup tent for 3 ... either way... daydreaming of touring

What brand of trike kit ???
Is it a straight axel or independent suspension ???

If you even think that it is coming from the drive shaft, I'd recommend having it towed to a shop that can do that type of repair to have the drive shaft inspected. One customer I had, had his front u-joint break while in 1st gear. He was leaving a stop sign when his front u-joint broke. It caused major damage to the right frame rail. Others I've that broke have caused major cracks in the cross braces between the frame rails. If I even suspect one has drive shaft issues once it gets to my shop, I will not even test ride it. I will never use its own power to move it around. It gets pushed around until the shaft is removed and properly inspected. If the Wing is properly maintained, the seller should have records where the drive shaft was removed and inspected in the last 24,000 miles.
