Pulling engine gl1100

Post by shevik » Sun Jan 12, 2020 3:31 pm

Hey friends,

I'm helping a buddy rebuild his wing after a gnarly accident. It's had a bad sprag clutch for a while now and seafoam never did the trick. Time to pull the engine. What else should we do while it's out? I've considered a new stator because I've read they're prone to failure.

Any advice much appreciated!

If I just work hard enough I should be able to get her out and about before riding season is over.

stator - If it isn't broke don't fix it. It's usually external factors that kill's em, (shorted/burnt connectors, bad rec/reg), they don't usually go bad on their own. Inspect the shellac insulation on the stator windings, dark shellac is ok, crispy/burnt shellac is not. Replace stator if insulation looks crispy, otherwise I'd leave it.

The oil pickup screen is impossible to get to while engine is in frame, a good time to clean that.

Neutral switch on the early 1100's is on the right side of the engine is right by the oil pickup screen and can't be serviced with engine in frame. If his neutral light was working as it should I wouldn't worry about it, but mine is stuck "on" so I pulled the neutral bulb out of the dash so I wouldn't have that green light glaring at me going down the road.

Vacuum Advance on rear of engine can be checked if you have a My-T-Vac brake bleeder tool. Timing advance plate should move at around 3-5 in/hg vacuum.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with other things.... Good luck :) :)
