Got it from a friend. Not registered since 2016 (California), not too good because they charge penalties and past registration to the new owner. Hoping to get it titled to me without paying past dues at all. According to old owner it should have about 100K miles on it.

Needs (according to the old owner)
Battery
Fork seals
Brakes all around
Missing CB (no big deal)
CD Player doesn't work
Has an off /on short that kills the bike while running
Has a "3 day short" the requires replacing a fuse (3 day means it takes 3 days for the fuse to blow)
Key stuck in gas tank cover

Missing
Speaker cover left side
Title (but has registration from 2016)

Has
Original manual
Original tool kit
A heel toe shift kit and floorboards

All the exposed black plastic is sun crazed, and some of the chrome is rusted.

I don't know if I should title it somehow and fix 'everything" or part it out.

Any thoughts regarding the "off /on short that kills the bike while running' and the "3 day short" ? I know not enough information!

Good thing my 1200 runs fine!!

First thing I would do is go over any added accessories such as extra lights. Odds are you will find your electrical problems there. You might have to compare photos of stock bikes to figure out what has been added. But once you start taking off plastics, it will probably become obvious.

I would normally agree with you but this former owner knows so little about motorcycles (and cars) that he paid a shop to change out his battery. He is really clueless about anything at all mechanically or electrically.

I took the battery out and put it on a low amperage charger in an attempt tgo get something that would light up the bike. Really don't want to spend money on it until I successfully get the title. It took several months for him to decide to give it to me.

While taking the battery out I found two non stock wires attached to the battery terminals, I would guess that they are about 18 gauge. I haven't yet started finding much out about the bike, the lists i put together are all based on his description. Obviously something has been connected to the battery directly.

The CB he gave to somebody and his comment was:
"I gave it to a guy who had to really disassemble the bike to remove it, he probably put it back together and a wire(s) were put into a place where 2 years later wore through and occasionally caused the bike to quit while running."

The "3 day short circuit" was dealt with by leaving the fusebox cover off and carrying extra fuses. That way when it blew he sinply put in a new fuse.

See what I mean about his abilities with mechanics and electric!

Not Woodys, unless he uses that name elsewhere. A neighbor had it and as you can see really didn't fix anything until it wouldn't work anymore, then he parked it. Ca wants 800.00 to fix registration, if I ask them real nicely they went down to 400.00 but that alot to pay for a bike that needs so much work.

Seems ridiculously high $$ for registration fix. I did one in MN, with no paperwork from the PO, for about $80 including the new plate. I have heard 2nd hand that there are some states that will record a "new" title application in their state via long distance, for the price of some simple paperwork filing. Then it can be transferred to Calif after that's done. Maybe Vermont or New Hampshire (?? I can't remember). I learned that on pwctoday.com, a site for jetski enthusiasts. Might work for bikes. Good luck.

I think if it was mine, I'd go after some of the more challenging fixes first *before* dropping any coin into registration resolution.

If the fixes turn into too much (time|money|effort) to accomplish, the last thing would be to sell it for salvage.

Luck to ya!

Anybody recognize this? A 30 Amp fuse (larger size) That reminds me of add on wiring but goes into a wire cover the looks a lot like stock Honda but doesn't feel as stiff as Hondas.

Also found the under seat - hold down attached to the front sides of the tank broken, have to see about having it welded.

Vermont will also do a registration. A friend got a run around from New Mexico and researched it and has a Vermont tag on his school bus rv conversion. The bike don't look too bad.

Yes but Vermont requires a VIN inspection, and i don't know any cops who will sign off on it. S.Dakota didn't say anything about that and i have the title (soon) from Ca to transfer.
