1981 GL1100 Resto-mod Progress

Post by Kirkj1s2 » Thu Jan 16, 2020 3:11 pm

Last fall I decided I wanted a winter projects to work on with my brother. As the youngest of four boys and a father that all rode for most of our lives, motorcycling has been a part of our DNA. With Dad and two brothers gone, this has been an opportunity for my remaining brother and I to work together on building a bike. To date, it has been a wonderful adventure.

I found a 1981 GL1100 that was destined to become yard art and was able to purchase it. The owner had purchased it strictly to acquire the sidecar that came with it and was willing to leave the bike itself to become scrap.

After a basic clean up, it appeared to be in pretty good working order, so we decide this was to be our project bike. I simply wanted a slightly modified GL1100 Standard. So the process of stripping it down began. Over the winter we have stripped, cleaned, repainted, replaced and restored as much as possible. It is now entering the assembly stage, and we are very pleased with the progress and results that have been made.

Spring is right around the corner so I am anxious to get this Resto-mod completed. Got it all back together, started up while still on the lift and knew that it would need carbs fine tuned. Left it for the night only to come out and find oil and gas on the floor. The seem in the tank had given way and apparently I missed an "O" ring in the front assembly. Took about a week to disassemble and sort it out. Got it all back together and off the lift, and out for its first ride, (No plastics, fenders or body parts) till seemed to have issue with #3 carb, so back on the lift, pulled the carbs and cleaned them up again. In process of reinstalling, broke the intake tube while tightening. New ones come in this week, seat comes in this week, painting starts on all body parts this week. Hoping for an early March completion date.
