Having read about old men riding GWs it occurs to me that there is another concern no one mentions. I'm 74 and I set the wheels in motion 3 months ago with an event that had nothing to do with riding. I'll keep it short. Old people's brains shrink and as this happens, the brain no longer is a tight fit in the skull. If you get a substantial blow to the head you can get a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) that can lead to balance issues and death without treatment. No matter how hard you think your head is, if your brain is a loose fit in your skull (think old people) you are vulnerable to this sort of injury. It can take months or longer to recover from the surgical procedure. You are not as tough as you were. Wear a helmet.

The last line of your post says it all. I put on my helmet before I ever pull my Wing out of the garage. Even if you tip the bike in the driveway, when your head hits the concrete the results could be catastrophic. I can think of no logical reason to ever ride a motorcycle without a helmet. The risk is to great.

When I was ten feet tall, immortal and bullet proof, and helmets were not even a thing, really (think 1964) I did not wear a helmet. I attained some maturity since then, spent 25 years in the army (where I learned that helmets really had the ability to save lives) retired and still rode throughout. As I am no longer immortal, nor bulletproof, and have shrunk considerably in size, I wouldn't even think of riding without one. Always a good reminder for someone to post something about this. Ah - for the other people,

Good post. I am such a creature of habit that I don't even move my bike (under power) in the driveway without helmet, gloves, and boots. It's such a habit to be ATGATT, that it just feels weird not to have it on.

Always. It's always the cage driver that isn't paying attention. $600 for an Arai is far cheaper than the hospital bills and recovery time...if there will be recovery......
