Cooling blower direction

Post by klook » Thu Mar 19, 2020 2:53 pm

I just ran my 2002 up to temp and when the blower came on it was blowing into my face out of the front of the cowling. This seems to be counter intuitive......The natural flow is in thru and out the side of the cowling.....why would it reverse this and work against nature when moving down the road?

Yes, yes and yes.

There is a mod to reverse the fans if you want. Generally they never come on going down the road, only parked or very low speed. At low speed, do you want the heat blowing forward or back on your legs?

Blowing back is a bit of a stretch, it comes out the side and the wings deflect it....blowing out the front is still putting it in "front" of you. No matter, just asking for my education. By the way, I am from the Machias area......my sisters are in Sanford.

Should have said before - Welcome to the forum. Sorry I didn't notice it was your first post.

Two great towns there. Basically half of the Maine Four Corners Tour without even trying. You're gonna love that bike.

All the 2001 to 2017 cooling fans blow forward. They only operate when stopped or moving forward at anything less than 15 mph.

Yes it would be beneficial in everyone's mind, except Honda it appears, to blow out the side through the radiators. Honda designed it that way to mitigate a rash of complaints, I suppose, from riders that would no doubt complain. Little did Honda take into consideration that riders are not happy unless they are complaining.

 love the always complaining MikeB

Welcome to the forum Kevin

Yes as Mike said, Honda did that to mitigate the heat blowing back in traffic out the side complaints of the GL1500 owners. And yes the fans shut off at about 18 mph and natural flow returns to flow back out the radiator side vents. It is a poor design indeed but works if you are moving more than 45-50 mph fine to cool the coolant temperature. Below that in high heat and slow speeds in city or mountain slow riding causes the temperature to rise where the fan should be on but isn't.
Unfortunately you would need different fan blades to reverse the fan flow properly. The way the blades are pointing is critical in the effect to move in the right direction. Yes some say you can just reverse the fan motor direction but it won't properly move the air flow effectively. If you encounter the temperature getting past 3/4-7/8 just pull over and let the fans cool it until the fans cycle off. No damage will be done unless the coolant boils over and spews out, which won't happen if you keep observant.
Just keep the antifreeze flushed and changed every 2 years/24,000 miles and check that the fans both come on when idling. Poor design yes. But it works.

The heat would be welcome almost year round in Machias if riding.....not so much down here in Tenn. Since so many know where Machias is.....I will further pinpoint to the Cutler rd, 6 miles from E. Machias, and the Look Canning factory. Not much french spoken if any, unlike Sanford....or OOB or Biddeford...
Thanks for the welcomes, havn't ridden in years but it seems like a natural fit after 8 years in this area. Just need a bunch of parking lot practice as this thing is not like any bike I have ridden....and it been all atv's for years.

Yup
Practice Practice Practice....
It was a bit intimidating for me 11 years ago getting back onto a goldwing 1100 after being off bikes for 25 years. Sure was glad the engine and bag guards helped avoid deep damage on the ooops tip overs.
I you haven't learned how to pick one up backwards, that will save your back.

Thanks, my brother has had one for the last 2 years, just moved out of Upstate NY to Charlotte, NC. He has gone to the west coast twice, and is in this forum somewhere...the guy I bought mine from was great, and another guy sent me a whole list of things from years of riding. I should take a class, they have them here, but will probably go and practice first. I am athletic and strong, just short legged. I am looking to get the seat customized to lower it a bit. I have taken one short ride and the stops and turns were terrifying.....lol. Going down the road was just plain fun....looking forward to this nonstop rain to go away and I can get out on it.

So should I conclude you and Tamathumper are brothers? He made that move and also spent some time in Vacationland

I've been down to Machias many times and expect to be soon in my implementation of social distancing.

At the other end, my late brother-in-law used to live in Sanford and I worked some in Wells.

Maine is a great state for riding as are TN and NC. Of course you guys have a longer season. Both TN and NC would be a consideration for a visit or a move for me.

Sorry that this pic has V-twinkies. I'll get a better one some day.

You have it, he is standing next to me right now....lol. He escaped long before I did. Although he was still in grade school when I went to work in the oil patch in Texas.....Time flies.
Ah, the old blueberry museum.....what an eyesore.....I knew the original owner, he used to work at the U of Maine blueberry research station just a few miles further on...
Have been home every year for the last 8 and sometimes twice.....mother passed last fall so went back....but we are not coming this year. Driving into rural Maine is depressing for us. The outer regions are just emptying out and the houses are falling down. New national park coming.

I was in Sanford and asked an old timer how to get to Machias. All he said was "you caant get theyah from heeah.

I learned something new today. Four years and I just found out the fan blow backwards at stop. Mine rarely come on anyway.
