1983 GL1100 starts but dies after 30 seconds to two minutes of idling? All ideas welcome and appreciated

Post by J1100 » Sat May 16, 2020 5:24 pm

Just bought my first bike yesterday, now it's time to get it running. 1983 Honda Goldwing GL1100 starts fine but dies while idling.

I've already drained/siphoned out all the old gas and put fresh fuel in, but no noticeable improvement. The previous owner replaced the fuel filter not long ago, so we can probably rule that out. From my limited knowledge of motorcycles, I'm pretty confident that it has to be either the petcock, fuel pump, or the carbs need cleaned. I just need some opinions on where to start.

I'm going to try to describe what it's doing. It'll idle for a little bit then starts to die/the RPMs dip a lot, then I'll open the throttle and the RPMs will go up to 2500 or so but won't go higher, then pretty much as soon as I release the throttle it'll die.

My buddy said it's sounds like it's almost definitely the carbs, but he's pretty new to the motorcycle world too.

I appreciate any help!

If age of timing belts is unknown REPLACE them.

Welcome to the site.

I would sync the carbs before tearing anything apart.

Make sure to review The HOW TO'S at top of any page.

Previous owner said they replaced the belt at the front, but not the one inside the motor. I'm going to go ahead and through a new petcock and fuel filter on before I go through the hassle of taking the carbs out, just because it'll be a cheap, quick, and easy job to rule them out

Thanks for the welcome

"Previous owner said they replaced the belt at the front, but not the one inside the motor."

this statement is confusing. the timing belts ARE at the front of the engine. the only belt that might be forward of them would be if a "poor boy" alternator conversion had been done, in which case there would be a drive belt for the alternator at the front.

if he DID replace the timing belts, the question now is ... how long ago ?

I'm not sure but I also have a 1983 GL 1100 and on the fuel switch there is a mesh screan that can plug up with rust particles etc they settle and as soon as the fuel flows they plug up the flow.
hope this helps

while sorting out my 83 wing I installed a HF fuel pressure gauge - this kept me posted on the fuel psi. The carbs are bound to need some love.
